Whole food and whole food derived ingredients
It was a priority for us to make our Primo Smoothie the best protein smoothie on the market, meaning that it is highly nutritious as well as extremely convenient. That’s why the backbone of our product is 20 grams of clean** protein from grass fed whey and milk protein, and recognizable healthy whole food ingredients that provide steady energy like sweet potato (the king of good carbs!), oats, chia, or quinoa, and contains micronutrients from fruit and veggies like strawberries, raspberries, carrots, spinach and kale. These are all the types of foods we try to eat on a daily basis, just delivered in a convenient smoothie format.
Look for other healthy ingredients on our label like fats from coconut and flax. Why overcomplicate what nature has taken millennia to perfect? Our lifestyles may be changing, but what we need to healthily fuel our bodies simply is not.
**Our protein comes from cows that are not treated with growth hormone, antibiotics, or rBST.
Our key ingredients and the good things they do for you!
Help build and recover lean muscle with clean grass fed whey and milk protein
Milk protein, and in particular whey protein, are superior forms of protein for muscle building, maintenance, and repair. Though our Primo Smoothie meal replacement is more than just a protein shake, 20 grams of grass fed whey and milk protein are key ingredients. They contain a full spectrum of essential amino acids plus a robust spectrum of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). Essential amino acids are vital for the proper functioning of your body, but cannot be produced, so must be consumed as part of your diet.
Not only does whey contain all essential amino acids, it also has the highest biological value (BV) of any protein. This means that amino acids are absorbed more readily and used more effectively for muscle repair and building.
Taking a step back to BCAAs for a minute, whey protein contains the highest amount of any dietary source. It’s nature’s superior tool for muscle maintenance, actually increasing muscle tissue production and reducing breakdown when consumed. And don’t think you have to be a muscle bound body builder to reap the benefits of whey protein. Normal exercise and regular physical activity day in and day out take a toll on your body, and BCAAs can help keep you strong and firing on all cylinders.
Fight inflammation and oxidation with curcumin from turmeric and tart cherry
Oxidation and inflammation occur in our bodies as a byproduct and response to exercise and normal day-to-day living. Though they are a natural part of metabolism, and thus, being alive, too much can inhibit our body’s ability to effectively repair itself. There are many things that help balance this equation, including certain foods we eat, recovery related activities like stretching or massage, or rest. Curcumin just happens to be one particularly powerful herb you can eat to enhance your body’s natural mechanisms of recovery.
Curcumin, a key compound contributing to the benefits of curcumin, is what give it its bright yellow color. Though it seems to be one of the mainstream media’s new superfood flavors of the month, curcumin’s roots run deep. It has been observed for centuries to have antioxidant and health benefits in communities that eat lots of turmeric as part of their diets, though only relatively recently a growing body of clinical research has been able to truly validate its effectiveness as an antioxidant with powerful anti-inflammation effects. A key thing to understand is that even though curcumin is derived from turmeric, in its raw form it is relatively unavailable for use by the body. On the other hand, the curcumin that we use in our Primo Smoothie meal has an extremely high bioavailability, so you get all the benefits of turmeric from it. That is to say, eating a bunch of turmeric root is not nearly as effective, or tasty, as a serving of our Primo Smoothie Meal replacement shake. As an added benefit, it’s also been strongly linked to brain health…who doesn’t want a boost there!
Tart cherry is another powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammation properties. Combined with curcumin, it provides excellent protection against some of the harmful, but unavoidable, effects of a fast paced, high-stress, active modern life.
Support gut health with digestive enzymes, pre and probiotics
Pre and probiotics both contribute to a healthy gut microbiome (a fancy way of saying digestive system health). Probiotics are “good bugs” or healthy bacteria that when adequately populated in your gut have been linked to all kinds of healthy benefits, including immune support, better digestion, and even mental health.
Prebiotics are not actually live bacteria like probiotics, but are certain types of non-digestible fibers that feed the already existing “good bugs” in your gut, helping them to proliferate. We combine both pre and probiotics in our Primo Smoothie Meal, helping keep your digestive system running smoothly with an array of nutrients that all function synergistically.Buy now
Essential Electrolytes and vitamins
Our bodies rely on a mix of essential electrolytes and minerals for optimum function. Many of these are easily obtained by eating a well-balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, good carbohydrates, healthy fats, and lean meats and fish. But then real life happens. Our diets are not always perfectly balanced, and for the active person or athlete, certain micronutrients are required to support the extra stress we put on ourselves. They can either become depleted more quickly as in the case of sweating out electrolytes or minerals, or are simply required to support the more vigorous demands of pushing ourselves while training or exercising. A few of these key electrolytes and minerals you’ll find in Primo Smoothie Meal are iron, vitamin D, magnesium, and the antioxidant vitamins C and E.
Low iron has been identified as one of the most common deficiencies in humans, and can often be even lower for active people. Iron is a key component to making hemoglobin, a protein in the blood giving it its red pigment which is critical for oxygen transport in the body. This is important for everyone, but particularly important for athletes.
Iron is an essential nutrient, meaning it can’t be synthesized by the body and must be obtained from food sources. Low iron can lead to a number of problems affecting your day to day, including reduced physical performance, general lethargy, and even mental fogginess and irritability. Iron uptake is enhanced by Vitamin C, also found in Primo Smoothie Meal.
Vitamin D has been shown in a number of studies to be directly correlated with a multitude of performance markers including power, speed, and overall cardiovascular capacity. There is a strong correlation between Vitamin D and muscle function and synthesis. It has also been shown that physical activity can reduce Vitamin D, making supplementation or additional dietary intake that much more important.
We all know that Vitamin D is obtained and enhanced by being outdoors and in direct sunlight, but even if you live in a sunny environment, if you are particularly active, your levels of Vitamin D may be reduced. Not to mention we’ve got winters to contend with, and if you are like most Americans, you probably spend much more time indoors on a computer than running wild in open spaces outdoors than you’d like to.
Magnesium is sort of an unsung electrolyte compared to sodium, potassium, and calcium, but it is involved in hundreds of processes happening constantly within the body. It affects muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve function, cardio activity, blood pressure, immunity, blood synthesis, and overall energy metabolism. A magnesium deficiency can actually amplify the oxidative stress caused by exercise, creating a bit of a double whammy. Like many other nutrients, it must be obtained through the diet and cannot be made by the body.
Vitamins C and E
Both Vitamins C and E are powerful antioxidants that combat the negative (but unavoidable) stresses caused by exercise and metabolism. Many of these negative effects can be exacerbated by other factors in our day-to-day lives like stress, reduced sleep, inadequate recovery, and not so great choices in our diet. Supplementing with Vitamins C and E help reduce oxidation and the overall negative effects it can have on your body.
