Although we are coffee drinkers through and through, there is something undeniably delightful about the light, earthy, and refreshing flavor of matcha green tea. Add to that all the known benefits of green tea, and that fact that matcha has even more of said benefits...and this smoothie, with the added nutrition of Primo protein smoothie mix, is next level when it comes to nutrition and fueling.
So what is matcha, anyway? Most simply put, it is a special type of green tea that was originally used in ceremonies by zen monks hundreds of years ago. It is grown with specific protocols of sun and shade exposure, which help increase nutrient density, particularly chlorophyll, which gives it its dark green color. There are different grades of matcha, ranging from ceremonial to culinary grade. Unlike "normal" green tea which is steeped, matcha is ground into a powder and whisked in its entirety into hot water or sometimes milk.
So why would you blend matcha into your protein smoothie? Well for one, it tastes great. Drinking green tea has also been shown to burn calories, reduce body fat, and increase mental awareness. We love mixing matcha into our protein smoothies in the morning for a nice pick me up (a bit more gentle than coffee), or in the afternoon if we are dragging and need a little energy. Here's the recipe:
-6 oz unsweetened almond milk
-6 oz coconut milk
-1 T matcha green tea (our fav is Matchaful)
-1 T roasted, unsalted almonds
-1 small banana
-2 scoops Primo Smoothie
-a few ice cubes
Combine all ingredients and blend!
